There's a yurt in the Nantahala Gorge of North Carolina where we've spent three fall vacations learning to be an adventurous couple again. The boys are independent adults, one in a career teaching with a master's degree, the other set to graduate with a bachelor's in the spring. We have time now and we treat ourselves to fall again.
Here on the coast of S.C. the days are mostly sunny and warm in the fall and a week of colorful, falling leaves with cooler temperatures in the mountains is a vibrant contrast to our everyday routine.
We hike, we did some white water rafting....we inhaled and explored. It was glorious.
It made every hour of working out and eating healthy worth it. Fitness isn't just reaching goals set on cyberspace, it's the key to moving independently through life doing the active things you enjoy. We saw lots of older people on our vacations....the fit ones were in the rafts and climbing rugged trails; the others were eating or slowly roaming the antique and art stores we visited.
We need to eat and we love art, but I am so happy we are fighting the aging process and can keep doing the more adventurous activities we love.

My Program:
After losing 35 pounds with weight watches, switching careers from a desk job to a constantly in motion physical therapy assistant, I use Sparkpeople to maintain a healthier weight.

Personal Information:
I live near a beach but vacation in the mountains. I'm ready to go hiking now. Is it fall yet?

Other Information:
Don't quit.

Put yourself first and make yourself healthy. The rest of the universe will respect you for it.....

after six months of working out almost everyday, I had lost three pounds. (That's last year's statement; this past year i gained seven while working out at more intense levels less frequently) That's gone after 30 days back a Spark people. Find something that works for you and stick to it.
LOG your foods, drink your water. It'll work

What are you doing to work on upper body strength? I am taking a strength training class at the Y, but even in my younger, thinner, healthier years, I have never been able to do so much as a pull up. And I know a lot of the obstacles require upper body strength, so I am a bit worried.

    Thanks for the add emoticon

Hi, I saw in one of your message board posts that you are training for the USMC Mud Run. That is one of my goals too! We want to do a women's team and while I would be the youngest, right now I am also the least physically able. So I would love to follow your training and progress as you work towards that.

Congrats on the half marathon!! I hate running, and there is no way in the WORLD I could do that... although I keep considering that a nice little 5K probably isn't a bad thing to make myself do.

Good Luck with your half-marathon! Mine is the next day. I am hoping for cooler temps too. It has been warm here and I run slower when it is warm. I just want to finish, but would LOVE to finish in less than 3 hours.

Just keep going! You can make it.

How did it go? Our weather cooperated and it was a perfect day to run 13.1 miles. I finished in my best time ever!! Let me know how yours was.
