I joined Spark in March 2006. My efforts have been inconsistent, and so I haven't seen much weight loss yet, (except for same 7-10 pounds that I lose and regain over and over and over again.)
I am not giving up however. At this point it is more about good health for me, than it is about weight loss, although I would like to lose 30 or 40 pounds to improve my health.

Looking back over the tracking of fitness and nutrition that I have done over almost 4 years, I can see some definite improvements. I am now a very regular exerciser, and even if the pounds aren't falling off, I know I am much stronger and more fit looking. In 2008, I felt like i was "always" trying to eat well, but when I did a reality check and looked through my nutrition records on Spark, there were only about 120 days that were recorded and properly within limits. (If there were no records, they were not good days.) In 2009 I managed about 200 excellent days, where the eating was within calorie limits. I am aiming for over 300 this year. With more consistency in my effort I know i can make this be the year that I achieve my weight loss goals.

I LOVE that quote and now have yet another Must Read book on my healthy lifestyle list! Thanks so much for introducing me to it. Your comments reflect my thinking exactly.

My one point of adaptation that makes the extremism less daunting is that I only think about my banned foods on a day to day basis. I don't think about never eating potato chips again in my whole life. I am just not going to eat them today. Obviously I can't at this point imagine a time when I would ever want to eat potato chips again but today is what I can imagine so today is what I control. My mind doesn't work well when I say never ever again - never in the next 40 years - it is overwhelming to my wee brain. But today - yes, I can see getting through to the end of today without them. Tomorrow - we'll start again.

I was shocked beyond reason to run that half so fast! Certainly being thinner will help you achieve your goal of getting faster too. I also approach my running on a day to day basis. Again, I can't see myself running 20-30 km every Sunday for the rest of my life so I focus on planning for the Sunday that is coming and do it once that day. It keeps the whole thing pretty centered and I've been running 20 km each Sunday since that historic moment of my half Sept 27/09.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. I enjoy so much this discourse on approach and process!
