why yes, it is natural - my hair colour, my style, my charisma, my way with words... oh, you were referring to my weight? well, no, that's not natural at all!

i wish i could say that i'm effortlessly able to maintain a healthy weight range within my bmi, but that would simply be lying. the truth is that i have to work very hard at it. every decision i make on a daily basis affects the size of my body.

i like to joke that my stomach can even absorb fat molecules and calories from merely breathing! my family has a genetic disposition towards obesity that i have to fight hard against. and it's required a complete lifestyle overhaul. i've been raised to enjoy comfort food, indulge in binges, and have never been taught to watch what i eat.

the result? i've simply always been overweight. that is, until january 2008 when i decided to stop procrastinating (my favourite passtime) and start taking control of my life, my health, and my weight!

since then, i've lost 12kg and two dress sizes. i haven't been this thin since primary school (before i hit puberty)! controlling calories seems to be the only thing that works, and it couldn't be easier on this site.

as a vegetarian, i find it useful as well to monitor my carbohydrate, fat and especially protein intake (as well as other essentials like iron, calcium, and fibre). the nutrition tracker has made me much more aware of what I'm putting into my body - and what it will cost me in the gym!

i finally feel like the ability to achieve divine balance and health is in my control - at last!

i'm thrilled that there are many people here with similar concerns. i find it so hard to find people that understand my weight problems in my family and social circle. so give me a shout if you need someone to talk to :)

this is the definition i try to shape my life around:


1. goddessness describes a blissful state of divinity, and can be applied only to those women who strive to rise above mediocrity, resist acceptance from the prevalent culture, and set themselves apart from the mainstream in order to achieve greater accomplishments.

2. sometimes mistaken as rebelliousness, goddessness indicates a state of being where one becomes actively concerned with environmentalism, animal cruelty, spiritual warfare, and human welfare, sometimes at the expense of popular opinion.

3. goddessness may be witnessed in the planting of trees to fight global warming, the cooking of vegan meals to save the creatures of this planet, the donating of blood for for the sake of mankind, the teaching of sunday school to enrich the souls of young children, and the caring of abandoned babies at a shelter on weekends.

4. while community involvement and familial responsibility is an important aspect of goddessness, so too is the caring of oneself through consistent exercise, healthy eating, spiritual awareness, and conscious living.

My Goals:
since becoming vegetarian, it's been really hard to balance my meals properly. i tend to eat way too many carbs and very little protein. one main goal is to learn to eat a balanced diet. another is to lose enough weight that my thighs no longer touch and my tummy doesn't look pregnant! yes, i've lost a lot of weight, but there's still a few unwanted flabby bits that need to go before my wedding in august!

My Program:
at the moment, i'm restricting my calories a lot and monitoring them closely. the goal is to lose 1kg a week until my wedding. i also do cardio and weight training with my sister at least 3 times a week at curves.

Personal Information:
my name is vicky, i'm 26 years old, and I come from south africa. culturally, eating meat is a big deal here, so I'm viewed as a bit of a rebel for refusing to take part. also, while obesity is a growing issue, women are expected to be super-thin, classy and submissive. i am none of the above, adding to my status as a social outcast. while I have no desire to start conforming to the pressures of society, i am sick and tired of being overlooked. everyone thinks that feminists are bitter due to thier dowdy appearances - so i'd like to prove them wrong by being pretty and passionate about the things i believe in! :)

Other Information:
i'm very interested in the raw food movement, although i can't really seem to get into it. my goal is to eat 80% raw. i was 100% for the month of feb and managed to lose 8kg in one month, which i haven't gained back, so i think there is a lot of merit to it. i am also trying out intermittent fasting because i find it easier to only eat at night rather than struggle with continuous snacking throughout the day.
