Yesterday, I was reading in Proverbs 1 and I read this:

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young; let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; at the head of the noisy streets [c] she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:

"How long will you simple ones [d] love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you -- when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

"Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me. Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."

The reason this spoke so powerfully to me is that our bodies were created by God and they have certain requirements in order to perform the way they were designed. When I was younger, I tended to want to do only what I wanted to do and to eat only what I wanted to eat. I used to secretly scorn women who seemed obsessed with dieting and exercise. I did go through periods of being very disciplined about exercise, sometimes for a year or two at a time, but I didn't maintain that. Perhaps those women were doing what they were doing for vain or silly reasons, but they were wiser than I was because they recognized the realities of our bodies in that they need to be cared for and they need to be given what they require or they will stop performing the way God intended them to. Now that I am older, I struggle with obesity, a slow metabolism, high blood pressure, aching joints, and chemical imbalances. If I had listened and been wise when I was young and cared for my body, I would not now be running after wisdom trying to fix the problems that come from doing the wrong thing for so many years. I am glad to see that you are working on this while you are young and you are taking steps now to take care of your body and to give it what it needs. That is a very wise thing to do -- take it from me! You keep going; you are doing a great thing. Hopefully, you will never deal with the problems that come from not taking care of your body and building discipline now. Just keep in mind: if you don't control your body, your body will end up controlling you. So take charge and take care of yourself.

When I was at the Villa last month they gave me a little devotional sheet about the tendency we have to lead a cluttered life. On the top of the sheet was the following quote by Thomas Merton:

“Our minds are like crows. They pick up everything that glitters, no matter how uncomfortable our nests get with all that metal in them.”

The scripture on the sheet was:

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21

Here’s part of what I wrote in my journal for you this morning:

The main thing I would pray for Judith this morning is for her to have time, rest and peace. I think a lot would fall into place if those areas were covered. Lord, I ask that you would give Judith the opportunity and the wisdom to recognize how to use that opportunity. Streamline her life and bring her back to basics – SIMPLIFY. Judith sees clearly. She sees to the heart of a matter, cutting through all the stuff on the periphery and going straight to the point. May she continue in that and be able to do it in her own life.
