I happened to see your question about Quebec on the travel team, and have a few suggestions for you.

I'm not sure whether you will have a car available, but if not, Quebec City is made for walking. I hope that you are staying somewhere inside the old walls, or just outside and adjacent to the Plains of Abraham. If not, take a local bus to Grande Allee, and walk from there.

Explore the old cobblestone streets, and enjoy the architecture. Many of the old houses have been turned into hotels or restaurants, but many others are still homes. There are many old churches, usually open during the day. A couple of restaurants I'd recommend are Aux Anciennes Canadiennes (please excuse my French spelling, but you'll get the idea) and
Auberge du Tresor. Both are fairly expensive, but great choices for lunch.

Craft and souvenir shops abound, some are tacky, others are pretty good. Be sure to check out Rue du Tresor (right next to restaurant/hotel), which is an artists' alley.

There is a ferry that goes across the St. Lawrence from Quebec to Levis. If you take it at night, you can get beautiful pictures of the lights of Quebec City. If you like to walk, take the ferry in the daytime and walk (climb!) up to a seminary high above the St. Lawrence.

The fort (still an active military base) is worth a visit, especially to see the changing of the guard. I'm not sure of the time, I think maybe 10 a.m.? The mascot is a goat named Baptiste.

If you have access to a car (or there are probably bus trips, check at your hotel), about an hour outside Quebec City there are 3 things worth seeing... Montmorency Falls, the Isle d'Orleans, and Ste. Anne de Beaupre.

As you can see, I love Quebec City. We live near Toronto, and go to Quebec every couple of years. My husband is a retired French teacher, and he loves to get a chance to use his language.

Montreal is interesting, but to me, not nearly as nice as Quebec. Go to Mount Royal, check out some of the delis, and go to the old city (smaller and not nearly as good as Quebec). The botanical gardens are good, some nice old churches, the train station is interesting.

Don't worry if you don't speak French, English is widely used in both cities. If you can use a few French phrases, you will be welcomed with open arms.

I'v added you as a Spark Friend, because I love your description of losing weight and then going back up... I do exactly the same thing, and in my mind, I think of it as "scuttling back up" ... perhaps to somewhere I feel safe?

Have a wonderful trip to La Belle Province. It's a magical place.
