In 2009, a doctor told me I had high blood pressure. She was right; the reading was high, though I was incredibly nervous and anxious when she took it. Rather than focus on dietary changes, the doctor insisted I start taking TWO different pills after having only had ONE blood pressure screening. I filled the prescription, but never took the pills, and instead decided to focus on diet and exercise. I lost fifty pounds in about a year, and it was a long, difficult road, but in my mind, it was better than popping pills to fix the problem. (And later, another doctor diagnosed me with "white-coat syndrome," saying that my high blood pressure could be attributed to my nerves!) At any rate, my blood pressure is completely normal now.

Despite the different opinions of two doctors and the mess that ensued as a result of the first diagnosis, I'm glad things happened the way they did. I wouldn't be where I am today.

My current goal is to get back down to my previous weight before I gained back all I had originally lost (50 pounds!) in 2009. I have a ton of clothes from that time period that I never got rid of, and I look forward to fitting in them again at some point.

It's definitely not starting over as you've already made great progress. It's more just recommitting to your priorities, I think, you know? And yes, those are excellent victories. I think most big victories are really made up of small ones, in just about any given situation.

I think guilt gives people an excuse to feel bad about behavior whilst not doing anything to change it. That's why I think it's pointless. If you feel wrong about something, then you should do what you can to fix it and then move on, you know? No point stalling by moping about it! :-)

Here's hoping 2011 is the best year for you yet! Good luck! :-)

Hey, friend. The short answer to your question is, yes. Especially during the weeks where I did everything right and saw zero movement on the scale. Even now, when I'm pretty far along on my journey, I still wonder if I'll ever get to exactly where I want to be from time to time.

What I try to tell myself is this: It's not a matter of whether or not it will happen. As long as I'm making more good choices than bad, it *is* happening. It's not a snap-your-fingers, overnight-miracle journey, and I know you know that. So, remembering that there's something going on even when the signposts aren't as visible as I'd like them to be helps me keep going. And you know, when I've thought about giving up (and I think everyone does), the idea of it is so distasteful to me because I actually really do like the lifestyle I've created for myself.

I like eating healthfully, and I like working out and seeing my fitness level improve. I like feeling more confident in my clothes even I don't feel like a supermodel. It's not all or nothing, you know? It's such a mental game, but if you can focus on the positives more often than the negatives, then you'll be all right.

Don't get down on yourself for the past couple of weeks. They're gone. Guilt is a pointless emotion. If you're not a fan of how you spent the past two weeks, then simply change your behavior today and let go of what's passed. We attach so much emotion to our choices on this journey, but, in the end, they're just choices. They don't determine your value or your ability or your potential for success. So, only look back to learn; and then keep moving forward. And lucky for us, the new year always feels like a good time to start fresh. :-)
