This is my 5th time "restarting" with Spark people. Let's hope practice makes perfect, or in my case, Almost Perfect.

I am not a huge online chatter but I am a huge online reader. Not sure why, but it feels strange to be posting personal information for just anyone to see. So it takes a while to get to know me and all my quirks.

I am 57 years old, no children, but two cats who think they are kids. They are certainly spoiled worse than many children are. Sixteen years ago I was forced into medical retirement due to back issues. Since that point in time the pounds have really piled on. A combination of less activity & more free time, mean far more opportunities to eat. That is an area where I excel.

To whomever might be reading this and thinking that they can not lose weight because ... "I am too fat, I am too old, I love this or that food, I have health issues, I can not afford healthy foods" I say please do not give up on yourself. All of those applied to me, still do for that matter. Yes, it might have taken me five restarts, but I am gradually doing it. You can too! I promise.

If possible, I encourage everyone who thinks they can not do it to just try one of the eight week 5% challenges. In my first one, I lost a bit over 6% of my weight. But more importantly, I went from using a wheelchair for most things to rarely using one. This was done not by weight loss, but by consistent strengthening exercises I believe.
And the drive to exercise was all team driven.

In January 2021 I joined a 5% challenge team. While one would think based on the name, of the that weight loss would be the main emphasis, it is not at least not directly. Sure you are challenged to lose 5% of your starting weight during the eight week contest. But each week, your team races against other teams to present destinations. Each minute exercised, no matter what type of exercise, counts as a mile. My team was consistently putting up large amounts of daily exercise minutes. Of course, after seeing a lot of 120 minute posts, I felt bad by only having 20 minutes to add. By the end of the eight weeks though, just being surrounded by others being active led to a significant increase in my activity, just so I did not feel like I was dragging the team down.

Lose 200#
Develop a healthy eating lifestyle
Complete The Beautiful Walk (a website which tracks steps on an around the world trek)

Short term goals:
Lose 20# by the end of February (done - as of 3/26/21 down 29# since 12/30/20 & down 64# from my highest weight)
Lose 45# by the end of June
Make it to Istanbul on the Beautiful Walk by the end of 2021

My Program:
I use the SparkPeople calorie range as an eating guide
I walk a minimum of 3000 deliberate steps (not counting normal walking around the house)
I plan to gradually ramp up my exercise bike riding (initially started @ 20 mins) to 45 mins per day - As of 3/1 currently @ 40 mins
